Apply sunscreen for a sun smart summer at the beach

Make a splash and look fab this summer with our our “Sol Tips.” We drop them into our blogs to help you stay sun safe through the sweltering days (that are already making waves)!

SolTip: Choose the right sunscreen

Picking the right sunscreen and reapplying it often are key to your sun-safe fun-in-the-sun.

Sunscreens vary in SPF (sun protection factor), ingredients, and the ratings can be deceptive. When you decide to purchase your product, select broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or more to receive ultimate protection! Broad-spectrum covers both types of sun rays — UVA and UVB — that can harm your skin by causing burns and wrinkles and are a primary cause of skin cancer. Applying sunscreen to your exposed skin is sol la la smart!

In a recent study, Consumer Reports found that about 1/3 of sunscreens tested provided less than half the SPF number listed on the bottle. The same report suggested these products as the top-rated sunscreens:

  • La Roche-Posay Anthelios 60 Melt-in Sunscreen Milk, SPF 60, $36
  • Equate Sport Lotion, SPF 50, $5
  • Trader Joe’s Spray, SPF 50, $6
  • Coppertone WaterBabies Lotion, SPF 50, $12
  • Equate Ultra Protection Lotion, SPF 50, $8

Chemical sunscreens can sometimes be irritating to sensitive skin (yuck!), so luckily other options are available. Mineral sunscreens (like this Neutrogena SheerZinc) use zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide to block UVA/UVB rays, which we love!

Using sunscreen on exposed skin, especially your face, is a must. But, our fave way to protect shoulders, arms and chest is with chic Sol La La UPF fashion accessories and apparel. So, grab your sunscreen and your Sol La La and let’s beat the heat together!
