Sol La La and Fair & Fashionable’s missions align perfectly: to use fashion as a platform to prevent skin cancer while looking fab doing it! That’s why we’ve joining forces to get the word out to women, everywhere — you could say we’ve become Sol Mates. :)
We caught up with Dr. Molly Menser, F&F’s co-founder and board-certified dermatologist who practices at Sunflower Dermatology to discuss fashion, skin protection and “loving the skin you’re in.”
What is F&F’s mission?
Fair & Fashionable uses fashion as a platform to reduce the rate of skin cancer in women and especially in preteens, teens and millennial women. We’re dedicated to changing perceptions about tanning and looking good doing it! The Fair & Fashionable goal is to show that real style means celebrating all natural skin tones in women of all ages.
Why did you feel the need to start F&F?
Skin cancer is the most common cancer across the country and worldwide and it can be devastating. This year, One in five people in the US will be affected by skin cancer! I see an alarming number of skin cancers, especially in young women. I felt passionate about taking the message, “you can look great and be sun safe,” outside of my clinic and into the public.
How is fashion one of the best ways to protect skin from sun damage?
It is critical to practice sun safe behaviors and what better way to do that than with stylish UPF clothes? Fashion is a perfect way to embrace sun protection and celebrate our natural skin tones because it is effective. The right UPF clothing can block nearly 97 percent of all UVA/UVB rays and doesn’t wear off throughout the day, it protects our skin and isn’t greasy and sloppy like sunscreens can be.

It not only makes you look good but feel good too! Fashion is our go-to sun protection because, let’s be honest, who doesn’t love shopping and wearing new looks?
Do you have a fave Sol La La Style?
I absolutely love the Sqape (UPF 30+). It is marvelous. Of course Sol La La’s UPF fabric is fabulous, soft and doesn’t wrinkle, but this piece is great to slip on when I’m heading out for the afternoon or running errands. I love it for sightseeing and touring or an outdoor event like a wedding or art fair when I need some sun protection for my chest and shoulders. It’s a perfect accompaniment to any outfit. It’s my fashion alternative to sunscreen!
